Heritage Marmion Farm’s roots trace back centuries, possibly to the noble Marmion lineage referenced in Norman history as early as the 11th century. The estate, located near Ravenoville in Normandy, reflects the long- standing traditions of Norman agriculture, its buildings constructed with hand-hewn oak and enduring stone.

Over time, the farm became a symbol of rural strength, passed through generations who maintained its character and presence.

D-Day Invasion & Airborne Stronghold
On June 6, 1944, the tranquil landscape of Marmion Farm was thrust into global history. That night, under cover of darkness and fire, paratroopers from the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions were scattered across

Normandy. Confused, disoriented, and deep behind enemy lines, many of these soldiers regrouped using known waypoints. Marmion Farm, located at a strategic crossroads just south of Ravenoville and east of Utah Beach, became one of those rallying points.

Elements of the 502nd, 506th, and 508th Parachute Infantry Regiments, supported later by infantry from the 4th Infantry Division landing at Utah Beach, engaged in fierce combat with over 100 German troops in and around the farm. Marmion became not only a waypoint but a stronghold of resistance, where leadership, grit, and courage turned confusion into clarity.

One of the most iconic images from the invasion depicts Pvt. James Flanagan of Easy Company holding a captured Nazi flag beside Marmion’s stone wall—a moment captured in early newsreels broadcast in U.S. theaters. Survivors such as Forrest Guth would later
recount this image as a representation of the airborne legacy: unity, victory, and sacrifice.

Unearthly Whispers & Haunted Walls Marmion Farm is more than a historic location—it is, some say, alive with memory. Visitors often report mysterious sensations: cold drafts on still days, flickers
of shadow in corners, and the distant sound of shouted orders or boots crunching gravel. Locals speak of these experiences in hushed tones, believing Marmion may hold more than just history—perhaps the spirits of those who never left.

Whether myth or memory, the aura of Marmion Farm has become part of its legend. It is a place where past and present coexist, drawing people into something larger than themselves.

A Pilgrimage of Freedom

Marmion Farm has never been abandoned. Preserved through generations and integrated into D-Day memorial tours, the farm has welcomed thousands of visitors, including veterans, their families, historians, and tourists. Figures like David Ashe (“Irish Dave”) have
championed its preservation, recognizing its vital role in the shared memory of liberation.

Visitors touch its ancient timbers, walk its stone corridors, and listen to stories of those who fought there —a sacred altar to freedom forged not in theory, but in action.

The Reclamation by Three Forks
In 2024, Three Forks Wood Reclamation, a veteran-led organization, was working on a nearby reclamation project in Normandy. A local contact encouraged them to speak with Marmion Farm’s landowner, Jean-Claude Picauneu, about the possibility of salvaging historically
significant materials.

Picauneu, deeply aware of the farm’s legacy, graciously agreed. A massive 21-foot oak crossbeam—once part of a centuries-old barn and fallen over time—along with several smaller timbers, was made available for careful recovery. These beams, weathered and bearing the marks of war and time, were not to be destroyed, but reborn.

Three Forks handled the materials with reverence. Nails and debris were removed by hand. The wood was treated and USDA-certified for shipment. The project was driven by a higher purpose—preserving legacy and honoring sacrifice.

From Normandy to Currahee
In July 2025, the 21-foot beam made its final journey— from the fields of Normandy to the Currahee Military Museum in Toccoa, Georgia. There, in the shadow of Currahee Mountain, where so many of the same paratroopers trained, the beam found its new home.

The exhibit now anchors a powerful tribute to the unity between the place where these brave men trained and where they bled. The beam bridges continents, campaigns, and generations.

It is not simply an artifact. It is a story told in oak and silence—a story that still speaks.

Legacy and Symbolism
This beam, reclaimed by Three Forks and acquired by the Currahee Museum through the generosity of its board members, stands for more than material:

• A physical link from barracks to battlefield

• A tribute to courage, community, and craft

• A museum piece that whispers history to all who pass by

This is the spirit of Marmion. This is the echo of Currahee.
